Skunk Ecology and Damage Management Techniques for Homeowners

PDF

Publication #: B-1075
Date Published: 07/01/1999

Publication Author(s):
Rich Olson
Andrea M. Lewis

Description:
Skunks are one of the most misunderstood mammals of North America. Many people believe the following misconceptions: skunks are born rabies carriers; they flick urine from their tail as a defense against predators; their spray causes permanent blindness; and holding them by the tail prevents them from releasing musk. In fact, none of these are true. According to the authors, ""Skunks are one of the least popular of all common wild animals, yet humans benefit from these animals because a majority of their preferred food items include insects, rodents, snakes, and dead animals."" Skunk ecology and damage management techniques for homeowners provides background information on the positive attributes of skunks, the damage problems, and economic impacts. This 16-page bulletin describes the distribution of the skunk population throughout Wyoming, habitat and food requirements, and remedies to neutralize musk odor.
