This study provides information that can help development leaders understand a great deal about the nature of their county’s economy through the examination of the change in Total Retail Sales and its components over an 18-year period (2001-2018, adjusted for inflation). In addition to evaluating Total Retail Sales and Total Retail Sales Per Capita, the study estimates the percent captured of potential Total Retail Sales and identifies each region’s top Retail Sectors. For many places, sales tax has become an important revenue source for local governments. A more complete understanding of retail sales activities could aid in a community’s successful planning of this public revenue stream.
