![]() | Solutions for Living: Innovative Devices for Continued Independence | |
Publication #: B-1228 Publication Author(s): |
Description:
An estimated 54 million Americans have some level of disabilityabout 21 percent of the total population. More than 50 percent of those disabled Americans are in their working years, from 18-64. In the last U.S. Census, 77,000 Wyoming citizens, or 17.1 percent of the states population, self-reported some type of disability. Today, individuals with disability can turn to assistive technology (AT) for help in continuing to perform basic tasks independently. This independence may be all it takes to help the individual in a work and/or home setting. AT is defined as any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, customized, or homemade, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. AT devices may be inexpensive and used for a specific task, such as taking medication, or they may be cutting-edge devices that can be used in a variety of settings.
