One third of adults and one quarter of children in America are overweight. Obesity is a complex disorder involving heredity, individual food preferences, physical activity levels, media influences, taste sensations, availability of safe places to play and exercise, cultural preferences, and both family and societal influences. Childhood and adolescent obesity in America: What's a parent to do? gives helpful advice to parents of overweight children and adolescents. The 11-page bulletin discusses a range of topics, including the failure of dieting; normal, healthy eating; the importance of physical activity; and some simple, healthy strategies for parents on helping their overweight children control types of food eaten and participate in family physical activities.
