Description:
Scales and mealybugs suck plant sap through specialized piercing-sucking mouth parts. Protected by a waxy covering, scales may infest many trees and indoor plants. Mealybugs are related to the immobile scale insects. Both have similar life histories and are controlled in the same way. Scales and mealybugs describes the body form and life history of these insects. The four-page bulletin discusses the history and management of the pests. According to the authors, plants in poor health due to poor maintenance or severe weather?such as hot or dry conditions?may be more prone to scale and mealybug infestations. "The visible presence of these pests can be removed, if practical, by pruning the infested plant parts," the authors explain. "Early detection of scale or mealybug presence is necessary for pruning to be practical.
