![]() | A Guide for Selecting Alfalfa Varieties for Irrigated Stands in Wyoming | |
Publication #: B-1009 Publication Author(s): |
Description:
Recently released alfalfa varieties offer greatly improved levels of disease resistance and potentially higher yields than older varieties. These varieties may be more expensive than the older ones, but the selection of high-quality seed is an important decision in alfalfa production. A guide for selecting alfalfa varieties for irrigated stands in Wyoming discusses variety selection criteria and major considerations when choosing varieties. The 12-page bulletin also lists the average yields for selected alfalfa varieties in irrigated yield trials for six different areas. The presence and severity of diseases varies by region, soil type, climatic zone, cultural practices, and price and availability of seed. Variety selection criteria should include climatic adaptability, yield potential, and at least moderate levels of resistance to pests or diseases when appropriate.
