![]() | Austrian Winter Peas for Dryland Green Manure | |
Publication #: B-1060 Publication Author(s): |
Description:
The winter wheat-fallow cropping system is a common practice in the western Great Plains. The primary objective of the fallow intervals is to store water in the soil profile. The fallow period has been found to be a rather inefficient means of storing water. To date, Austrian winter field peas seem to have the greatest potential as a green manure in the winter wheat-fallow system. This bulletin discusses growing the peas, managing a green manure crop, and assessing wheat yield and quality.
