Publication #: B-1072 Publication Author(s): |
Description:
Using radish and mustard trap crops to control the sugar beet cyst nematode (SBCN) limits risks to both humans and the environment by reducing the need for a soil fumigant. Ten Steps to Successful Trap Crop Use in the Big Horn Basin lists recommendations based on experience growing these crops in Europe and in the United States. This two-page fact sheet discusses how to select fields for trap crops, how to facilitate trap crop planting, and how to make sure soil fertility is adequate. In addition, the authors discuss the importance of soil moisture, proper seedbeds, and timely planting. Because growing trap crops over an entire season is expensive, these recommendations are based on growing them as a second crop.
